Software Rescue & Takeover

We help businesses take control of bespoke software they depend on after the original developer or supplier is no longer available.

Take Back Control

You may recognise these problems

Are these the problems your business is encountering?

01

The original developer or supplier is no longer available

02

Nobody has a complete picture of the code, hosting or dependencies

03

Small fixes feel risky because the system is poorly understood

04

Documentation is missing, outdated or held by one person

05

You are unsure how to deploy, monitor or recover the software

06

The business depends on a system that nobody fully owns

Technical debt can consume 42% of a developer’s working week.

We take over troubled, undocumented or unsupported software, restore control and create a clear path towards a system your business can rely on.

Our approach

Our Software Rescue & Takeover Approach

01

Understand the Situation

We learn what happened, how the software supports your business and what needs attention now.

02

Review What Exists

We assess the available code, infrastructure, databases, documentation, access, backups and third-party services.

03

Identify the Risks

We determine what is working, what is broken, what is missing and which parts of the system are worth keeping.

04

Stabilise the System

We prioritise critical issues affecting reliability, security and day-to-day operations.

05

Recover the Knowledge

We document the system, its dependencies and deployment processes so essential knowledge is no longer held by one person.

06

Create a Clear Roadmap

We explain your options, whether that means improving, integrating, modernising or replacing the existing system.

Recovering technical knowledge

No Documentation? That Doesn't Mean It Can't Be Rescued.

Missing documentation is common.

We investigate:

  • Code
  • Database
  • Infrastructure
  • User behaviour

Your employees often hold valuable knowledge such as:

When we click this, it sends something to finance.

This process runs every evening.

Nobody changes this field because it breaks something.

This spreadsheet is needed before we can run payroll.

We turn hidden knowledge into usable documentation.

What are software rescue services?

Software rescue involves taking over an existing, struggling, abandoned or unsupported software application and determining how to stabilise and move it forward. This can include technical assessment, bug fixing, documentation, infrastructure review, code improvements and ongoing development.

Can you take over software developed by another company?

Yes. We can assess an existing codebase created by another developer, freelancer, internal team or software agency and determine what's required for a structured takeover.

What if the original developer has disappeared?

We can still investigate the software if appropriate access to the code, infrastructure and systems is available. Missing documentation makes the process more investigative, but it doesn't necessarily make the application impossible to rescue.

Can you rescue unfinished software?

Potentially. The first step is understanding what's actually been completed and assessing the quality of the existing work. We can then determine what should be kept, fixed or rebuilt.

Do we have to rebuild everything?

No. In many cases, parts of an existing application can be retained. We recommend understanding the codebase before deciding whether rescue, partial rebuilding or complete replacement makes the most sense.

Can you take over unsupported bespoke software?

Yes, subject to an initial technical assessment and appropriate access. This is one of the key situations our software rescue service is designed to address.

What if our software is very old?

Older software may require a combination of rescue and legacy modernisation. The immediate priority is understanding its condition and stabilising important risks. We can then determine whether continued maintenance, integration, modernisation or replacement is the appropriate longer-term strategy.

Can you continue developing the software after taking it over?

Where appropriate, yes. After the initial takeover and assessment, ongoing development, integration or modernisation can form part of the longer-term roadmap.

How much does software rescue cost?

It depends on the condition and complexity of the application. A small application with good code and missing documentation is very different from a large system with significant technical debt, infrastructure issues and unfinished functionality. That's why the first meaningful step is an assessment. We want to understand what you have before telling you what it will cost to rescue it.

Start with a clearer next step

Don't Rebuild Blindly. Regain Control.

When software becomes unsupported, the first step is understanding what you already have.

We assess the system, stabilise what matters and give you a clear path forward.
